We are working together, and with the police, on a proactive strategy for preventing crime in Mount Pleasant Road.

Some think it would be a good idea to hire a security company to patrol our streets at night. It would be expensive. Here is a sample quote. But might the cost be worth it to stop our cars being stolen and houses being burgled?

We could go ahead by finding out how many households are willing to contribute, then set up a scheme they would fund.

There are others, though, who would prefer not to live on a street that employed private security.

How can we reconcile these two viewpoints?

And might there be other ways of reducing crime, that would be more cost-effective, and attract everyone’s support?

Things like::

• Working with Brent Council to evolve cost-effectve ways of improving the quality of our collective spaces, and finding the funds with which to implement these: so communicating that we care about our street
• Arranging activities that encourage face-to-face contact between neighbours, so that we know each other well enough to be able to identify strangers and intruders
• Getting children and young people to design posters which beautify the street, while communicating to criminals that they are unwelcome and we are watching them.
